Translating

Post by SomeCallMeChris on Mon Dec 13, 2010 8:19 pm

I could do some translating for you, if you like. I've been reading manga in Japanese for years now and I've got a pretty good understanding by now (although whether I past the JLPTN2 is still questionable, but that has more to do with my speed of reading than my reading comprehension.)
Let me know.

Heh, clearly you're nuts, you're volunteering your efforts in a site dedicated to translating Japanese comics, for free! Oh, wait... that describes me too... hmmm. Smile

(Really, though, I was just teasing.)

Welcome to Overloadscans! Smile.

Is there any specific series you'd like to do? Otherwise we also have some series you could pick- it mostly depends on what you want to do.

Thanks! Hmmm, I looked in the projects forum but it seems like it might be a little out of date, I'm supposing the current discussions are in places I can't get to yet. I don't know if To Aru Majutsu no Index has a translator yet... I don't know the series but the synopsis sounded amusing, I'd probably enjoy that.
I do know Neuro, at least, I've read about the first year as it was serialized in Jump, and I don't know if you have a translator on that yet.
I'd be glad to look at the list, and wouldn't mind translating most things, although there are some few manga that I just don't care for. I won't want to translate something that I don't enjoy reading, of course, but if you have top priorities, I'll certainly consider them within that limit.
I have pretty wide tastes, so it's not much of a limit anyway.

someone from mangahelpers is translating index right now...
About neuro, we're getting the translations from the old scans (this series is a re-scanlation)
xdeathcat is translating godseeker...

If you want to look for a new series you want to translate(who knows it might become popular~ ^____^),
you can look at the 'new manga shoutout' threads over at 'projects'
(or simply pick anything from mangahelpers ^^)
You can also look for new series here with raws available: clicky
A personal suggestion, I need someone to translate 'REC' :O

[EDIT]
oh and should I 'transform' XD you to staff (so that you would also see the staff section)? That would mean you're already with us ^____^

Gintama is also an option since nobody has been doing it for a long time... Though it'll be very annoying to translate due to massive ammounts of text.

About Toaru - I'm not sure if the translator will keep on translating, he doesn't do it on a regular base, it'd be nice if we had our own trans available for that.

Re: Translating

Post by SomeCallMeChris on Tue Dec 14, 2010 2:46 pm

Well, I took a look at the first volume of REC, and it looks like an entertaining story, but, it seems to already have people working on it?
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2322

I suppose I could start translating from one of the later volumes, although I kind of want to read up the story up to that point first and not just jump into the middle, hmm.

Gintama is licensed to Viz, (according to http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=228) and probably left to the professionals now.

The various things listed in the first post of 'possible projects' all seem to have some amount of working going on or gone on already except for Tetsuwan Birdy Evolution, but I guess they are listed as possible because they've been abandoned?

Yeah it's licensed but still running in WSJ, just like OP, Naruto etc. W/e.
About REC - Their last release was over 250 days ago, they probably dropped the project- this goes for most things in the project list.

Re: Translating

Post by SomeCallMeChris on Tue Dec 14, 2010 6:09 pm

Right now I'm reading the first volume of REC, which I thought someone had mentioned in this thread, although I don't see it now, hmm.
I guess I'd skip ahead to chapter 45 to start actually translating since the first 44 chapters were already done by another group.
Even though it's an easy read, that would be a -lot- of reading before I even start translating, so I don't think I'll catch up completely before I start (assuming that I wasn't hallucinating that someone posted an interest in it. It's not worth translating if nobody's going to pick up my translation and make a release out of it!)

If Toaru has been abandoned, I'll probably take a look at that too and see how that looks, the synopsis sounded amusing, anyway. I haven't really taken a good look at some of the other things in the suggestions thread, but, I imagine there's some good stuff in there.

Re: Translating

Post by SomeCallMeChris on Tue Dec 14, 2010 8:55 pm

I'd say, definitely start learning the grammar as soon as you know the kana. If you don't have a book that you like, you can try Tae Kim's Guide (from the site where I saw your post)
http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar
It's a unique analysis of Japanese grammar, but a good one for really understanding Japanese properly.

You shouldn't delay in learning the Kanji either, but ... with the rikaichan add-on, or manga that have furigana, there's some things you can read without knowing the kanji. There's nothing you can read without grammar, and vocabulary. You could learn just a couple kanji a day until you have the grammar basics down.

And don't get bogged down in perfecting your kanji. Learn one meaning and one pronunciation and move on, you can add more readings later.
