Job Application: Cleaner

Post by dutchdude on Sun Mar 27, 2011 8:07 pm

Hallo all,

My name Is Dutchdude, I'm 20 years old
I found out about this place through Mokuren ( ^^ ), never did cleaning before, so I'm expecting some/ a lot of criticism hehe.
I would love some advice to improve on this and maybe in the future also do Typesetting.

I only cleaned nr 1, 5, 7, 9 and 13.

Alright, going trough it page per page...
First generally.
Ah you redid borders. Looks very sexy, nice to see that you can do that. We don't actually do it on one of our current series but maybe we should. ^_^
Page 01:
Rotation and cropping all looks fine, leveling also - except for one thing. I wonder what happened in the middle panel, the v-shaped thing. It's a very dark gray, and it seems you realized this and to fix it up, but it didn't went all that well. What I usually do is select the part on the raw, right click layer via copy, and then level that new layer that appeared softly and merge it down.

Page 05:
The page is a bit underleveled. Too white- if you look at the whites you can see that they're still fairly dusty. The redraw was somewhat messy but on overall pretty good- Better then most redraws that I've seen of this page!

Page 07:
Again alot dusts on white. Thats a point we need to work on.
I wonder why you moved the 'background copy' layer- the raw you was cropped correctly but now you've got part of the black paper back and part of the image is cut off where that wasn't needed. Nothing much though. Good dust removal on blacks

Page 09:
Not much dusts left on white, thats good. You used some sort of filtering here- I can't say exactly what but it lost alot details and some of the grays are weird. This has more something to do with the cleaning method, not the actual cleaning so.

Page 13:
Looks good, great redraw. Watch out that it doesn't get too dark all, some parts are a little dark.

Page 15:
Page is blurred, not sure why you did that but it ruined alot of tones =/.
Redraws not finished, but the ones that you did seem ok. Normally recruits don't do color pages so you shouldn't worry too much about them. We don't get them that often and other cleaners can handle em.

Your cleaning and redraws are fairly good.
There are few things- Watch out with your leveling. it was mostly good but also pretty off on some pages (too white). and We'll teach you filtering with topaz. First now I'll give you one other page - please don't use any filter. It's page 10 in the cleaning pack. Level to white and for the blacks I suggest you use the burn tool. Try not to lose too much detail!

I did Page 10.

File: http://dmc-clan.net/Manga/Cleaning%20Test-10.psd

So what I did was only level the white, and for the blacks I used the burn tool, then I cleaned the dust etc.

It was a bit underleveled. A lot of dusts on white there were (you removed most of them by hand, which was a lot of work) and on black too. When leveling you have those peaks, and normally you'd want to have the sliders just after the top of those peaks. Just watch the page. We'll get on to filtering: I'll copy paste a text I once made before

Now, some paper qualities are fairly bad, for that most scanlation groups use a denoising tool. Leveling doesn't get rid of enough dust and to manually remove everything would take too long, thus a filter is needed. I'd suggest topaz denoise for you. I myself use 2.2, wich is fairly old but I know how to work with it. 3 is fairly popular and you also have 5, the newest and the fastest. My guess is that you'd want to use 5 - All three versions have a link below. It also contains a crack. It's a tool you only want to use when it's really needed, because it can ruin things up pretty bad.

Get one of the three versions below and tell me which version you took. They all have different parameters so I'll give a detailed explanation on how to clean your next page with your new program once I know wich version you chose. zz. 2.2 and 3 can be somewhat slow compared to 5, 5 is really fast. It's all what you prefer.

Download link for 2.2:
http://dl02.mangashare.com/school/TopazDeNoise v2.2.rar
(thanks binktopia!)
Download link for 3:
Alright, in this link there's some trial version of PS, topaz denoise 3 and topaz cleaner 2.0. Cleaner 2.0 isn't needed for this test, but it's nice to have when cleaning pages. If you choose to download topaz 3, then also install cleaner 2.0. Ignore the ps trial version.

This link was given to me by whythecake, however I am unsure of the origin. Whoever created this pack, thanks!
Hm I did find topaz denoise 5. Forget what I said earlier

Sodeq05 gave this to me- Gratitude.

Oke thx for the tips and link to the file.

What I did with that last on ( nr. 10 ) I just leveled the white and darken the dark lines with the burn tool. ( And trying not to burn the gray areas) And yes I was removing the dust bye hand...XD. Does that have something to do with my leveling proces on the image ?

Will be using Topaz 5, can't install atm, but I will be home in about 2 hours.

Will work on the filter ( Topaz) after dinner.
In the meantime I did nr. 10 again.
Made the lines a bit darker then before and used the Adjustment layer to remove dust. If I made it any darker I would be removing details, I just hope I did not burn the image too much hehe.

Excellent job! You barely lost any details, burning was not too much, don't worry.
A tip for next time, try clicking a black with the magic wand tool (tolerance 50, anti alias checked) then contract the selection by 2 pixels. The whites wont be selected and you can burn more easily. Watch out those, small white lines and dark grays still slip in the selection sometimes. Further the page looked really good, nothing to say further Smile

Ah thats good to hear Razz and nice tip, I did use the the Magic wand tool for selecting large black or white areas but sometimes I felt that I cuts away too much and it looked kind of "burned". So I think the contract selection with 2 will fix that Razz

Oke I did nr.12

This page was harder then I thought, I was not sure if something needed to be completly black or that the "dust" in that area was part of the image.
So I'm awaiting your cc hehe. ( I think the filtering is oke, its easy to use. )
I was not sure if the SFX where to be cleaned or not, I let them in.

Yeah, shonen jump paper is a pain - Mostly you have to ink parts manually.
But generally you did well - Some small dusts left on black, but nothing much.
Your copying was somewhat blurry- I highly advice you to do copying AFTER resizing. When you resize, the screentones will be easier to copy in the pattern; you'll see. in the 2nd panel the guy who's getting beat up, you inked his kimono black, while it's actually supposed to be a small texture. (in the top panel those thing on the kimono also aren't black you see) Good job redrawing the white lines around the spaceship. (this is also something that I do after resizing, but it doesn't matter much). You forgot to redraw the stars though ( there were some stars in that panel but they were hard to see)Generally good. Now let's see,
at the moment I'm unsure wether I should give you another page or not, you're close to passing. Nah, you passed, you can do most things and you're a quick learner so it'll be fine. I'll add you to the staff later, running out of time- Sorry

Alright; your added to the cleaners group and have the rank you should be able to see the staff boards now. Check it trough a bit, usually works get posted there etc. Also I'd suggest you to join us on skype, as we discuss most things there.
If you've got any questions feel free to ask.

About the page: Stars and copying looked better, good. Borders looked nice, I myself prefer un anti-aliased borders (I guess thats mostly because I have to make those myself) but thats just a matter of preference.
