- Moved the topic to the recruiting area -
Typesetters type in the translation made by the translator. the scanlation of a chapter goes like this:
The raw provider receives the raw, and scans it.
The translator translates the japanese on the raw into english we can all understand.
(optional) A proofreader checks the script made by the translator for grammar mistakes, punctuation, fluency etc.
The cleaner cleans the raws, makes em look nice and tidy.
The typesetter types in the english translation from the translator in the cleans from the cleaner
(optional) A quality checker checks the final product for any mistake made by any of the previous processes.

Yeah and some small tricks for text effects, such as strokes, or patterns over text. Those get covered in the guide you were following, so don't worry about that.

Re: Typesetter [PASSED]

Post by Hazama on Thu Dec 02, 2010 10:19 am

full stops...? O.o

anyway, I reviewed it:
fairy tail 3 - 4/5, You need to make the "come with me" text a little bigger though.
fairy tail 5 - 4/5, 'ah!' and 'begone!!!' centering are off though but not really a biggy.
fairy tail 9 - 4/5, make the 'no...' and 'it was a close thing' texts a bit bigger.
beezlebub 7 - 4/5, hmm try fixing the texts in the 2nd to the last panel. italicize the text in the last panel.
beezlebub 11- 4/5, fix text centering, italicize thoughts.
demon defence - 3/5, you should have moved the hearts in the first panel to the bottom.

honestly, the corrections are insignificant. Its common with typesetters to make these mistakes. That's why there are quality checkers! Very Happy so basically, these corrections are to be done by QCers. All the crap I wrote here are just to ease a QCer's work Basketball

Some tips, if the script is supposed to be shouting/screaming, use heavier fonts like mouthbreather, badaboom, yikes, etc.
thoughts must always be italicized and not necessarily gray colored (unless the project leader wants it)
try to fix the shape of the texts. Basketball Basketball Basketball

hmmm and I dunno why other groups stack typesetting and redrawing. I mean, redrawing is a cleaner's job, right? O.o

Re: Typesetter [PASSED]

Don't worry, our cleaners will clean every text (and do redraws) on the page;
Not much too say, since hazama went over it quite nicely.
When there's alot of texts, it's nice for the QC'er to place the texts in a map. Since you usually get alot of different layers, it makes it easier to find things if the texts are in a different map. (create a map by clicking the map icon thing in the layer screen in photoshop. Or go to Layer -> New map. but this is also just something to make it easier for the qcer, actually it's not needed at all, just my personal preference.

I wonder why Ieatmanga uses those cleans for their test O.o. They got way better cleans to show off with, so why these? hm.

About the full stops and things like ~ or hearts.
Did you mean with the full stops things like '----'? If so, those things usually get mixed in the translation, by prolonging the last word. Yeah---- Becomes Yeeeaaah or something. If not, I either just remove the full stop and let it by or copy the full stop from the clean. (we clean our bubbles on a different layer then the cleaning of the page, so you can use the clean of the page to select the stop then right click on the selection and select 'Layer via copy'. Then place it above the layer with the cleaning of the bubbles and move it on the right spot) Same goes for Tildes (~). Although, you can type out a - or ~, I don't but thats just my preference. for harts, also copy those, never type '<3' or something, it just looks stupid. Same goes for things like music notes etc. If this is a little confusing, I'll try to explain it better, sorry :X.

Re: Typesetter [PASSED]

Ah, only put full stops if they show up in the raw.
And don't type the ~, but copy it off the clean. (like you did with the heart).
I said maps, I ment 'group'. Basicly you can place all your text layers in the group, so it's easier to look at the other layers. But then again, it isn't needed, just something I do.

Correct your mistakes when you got time, and want to do it. be it the day after tomorrow or over a week. We can wait, don't worry.

To be honest I'm also not sure what Hazama wanted you to do with that; Had a quick glance trough it; most of it looked fine.
Normally you'll have the raw layer to compare with (so you can see what it looked like in japanese); makes it easier for choosing some fonts for particular situations, or so you know the text effects. One thing, on the Beelzebub 7 page; the last panel, I think the text is supposed to be black with a white stroke of 2 px. (Like the dots in the same panel). Then again, you couldn't really know this. Now let's wait for Hazama's judgement, since he's our 'master' typesetter.
