Madoka Magica

Post by ClaymoreSmiley on Mon Feb 21, 2011 7:31 am

WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT!?

I just got done with ep 3.

You know what other series' ep 3 this reminds me of?

Naru-freaking-taru

Oh man I'm so glad I hadn't seen any discussion/spoilers on this show before I started watching it. It absolutely gut-punched me. Had no idea it was coming. Amazing. Now I have to watch the whole series. So should you if you enjoy the sort of crap Narutaru pulls starting out all moderately cutesy and strange and then flipping the switch after a few eps. Jeez man. I can't calm down. What a twist.

The most recent episode is all over the place in the cutesyness then blamming you with broken little girls learning the world is an f-ed up heckhole.

The funny thing is they were trying to mislead people, but then when it turned out to be what everyone expected of him the ratings shot up and everyone pre-ordered the DVDs and BluRays. Would the ratings have started different if they'd been honest from the start? Or maybe it was the twist that hooked people... Hmm. I guess that's a question for the philosophers. I'm caught up through 7 now and it's great stuff. This may replace Nanoha as my vote for Most Amazing Departure from Normal Magical Girl Story.

They knew that the surprise would be ruined otherwise. The publicity from all the critics saying this is another knockoff magical girl show and then proven wrong was astronomical. Glad to see others are up to date. So far no-one has a innocent backstory though, its all hey wanna not die Blondie , or Hey innocent starving girl want your father to be worshiped and treated like he deserves?

The only thing I have issue with is the 'wish' plotholes. I feel like throttling these girls to pound some sense into them... I mean, c'mon, honestly:

'I wish there were no witches' OOOOOooooo, series over.
'I wish (that one person) would come back to life' I can imagine there being a restriction against this but since they've never said no it's stupid that no one has tried it yet

I realize that obviously there's reasons they haven't used these things, but even just saying 'by the way you can't do these wishes' would be nice because as soon as I heard about them those were the first thoughts I had.

I do find it funny that we're more than halfway done and the titular character hasn't happened yet.

The series is the type where any wish you get is going to screw you badly after all. The part to remember is that no matter what you want its all up to Kyubey to interpret the wish. Also Judging from recent revelations about soul jewels and the
Spoiler:
fact that witches have them only corrupted means that its very likely that magical girls turn into them at some point maybe after they lose all hope or just give up. They are immortal trapped souls after all. The person back to life gig would suck man. First is it immortal life or just a new lease on life? Then what happens when they die again since you only get one wish, health seemed to be good until they showed us that little caveat.
The white letters are intentional as this portion is very spoilerific for those not yet at my point in the series.

I already had my theories on this series knowing it was going to be a Faustian themed one. There's a lot of German, and European lore allusions, as well as possible, Ancient Greek and Roman allusions. Possibly. The art is stunning. I'm still speechless from the last episode, so much happened [ep. 8] No spoilers.
