Don't worry, it's not hard it's mainly a process of trying etc.

Looked at narue, levels were good except there's a little gray left on the top panel, wich should be removed. rotation was a little off just like the cropping. Now, if there's some heavy dust left on top of the page like here, you can do several things. leveling it all out is not always an option because that'll damage the rest of the area. my suggestion here would be to select the dusts (with a quickmask or just the lasso tool) and then only level the selection.

However that is not my main concern, I keep wondering what you do with the grays. I've made this comparison picture, left is yours right is mine, ignore the difference of position and the tone, just look at the gray itself. Yours is kinda blurry while mine has the faint tankobon pattern in it. It doesn't seem to matter much but the right most looks closer to the original and alot better if you ask me. the weird thing is: to get this gray I seriously did not do anything except level and resize. So I keep wondering what you did. http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/9785/25699141.jpg hope you see it.

Oh and I appreciate the good post thing, but it creates those orange abominations so please do not click that xD.

That redraw was pretty good, if I were to qc it I'd only add some lines you forgot and whop, it's done. Yeah about the shoe, the angle is a bit wrong, but that's a bit hard, it's ok. Normally I'd like to move on with Magazine scans instead of Tankobon, however the grays are still weird (Yes I have said this way too many times). What do you do with the tones then?

Oh and one thing, why do you always merge the layers? For the typesetter for example it'd help tons if there was the original raw layer there. And you can always go back and duplicate the raw layer again if you need to, layers are your friends.

Hm if you exactly follow the idiots guide then there should be no problem with the grays O.o
what version of photoshop do you have?
If you only level, rotate and crop then I really don't know what causes the grays =/.

Post by whythecake on Fri Jan 28, 2011 4:24 pm

alright i load the image up.
then i start rotating (if needed) then crop.
then i start the leveling
on that image one with the big swordy thing and damn foot Razz i put the white tone to : 244
and black tone to :46.
then i would do the image size to 1200.
and then begin the task of erasing the text and redraw that part of the mag.
...
name my mistakes....

Big swordy thing and damn foot?
Nothing seems to be wrong there ._.
Could it be a saving issue? If I save a page like that for example as a Jpeg with blur I get the same effect - but it's a PSD file...
Otherwise I really don't know, I'm sorry.
If anyone else here has an Idea, please state.

Ah if you're willing to give them another shot, please try making a background copy and doing it there, want to see if there's any difference between the layers. (if the raws also get touched etc) Otherwise we'll just go on with magazine pages and figure this out later...

Re: >Editor for whythecake [PASSED]

Unfortunately problem stays :X. Levels and copying are further good, so we'll just get on with Magazine raws alright.
Do you still have page 3 & 4 of that test? Because you'll be cleaning those now. If you want another name your favorite magazine serie and I can give you another...
You'll need some things for this; First off Topaz denoise. It's what we use for these kind of raws, warning though do not overuse it. If you just use it on the settings we always use, it'll be fine. One thing about filters, only use them when the dusts are so bad that they need it. blah blah.
download topaz denoise here: http://dl02.mangashare.com/school/TopazDeNoise%20v2.2.rar (thanks mangashare) I know it's working and safe, don't worry. It's not the latest version, I don't use the latest version either, you can go and download it somewhere, I think V3 is the latest, but I don't think it makes that big a difference.
And you will want to have this action: http://www.sendspace.com/file/uvy9t5
Install topaz denoise, it comes with instructions if I recall correctly and place that action in your adobe photoshop folder, go to presets and then actions.
When you load photoshop the action will (hopefully) be there- Take a page, rotate / crop it and let the first step of the action run. It'll take while; then you'll the page got a bit 'blurry'. Level it correctly, alot of dust will still be left on blacks. Now you'll use the burn tool to blacken those blacks, choose your own exposure percent but make sure it's set to 'shadows'. (I use 30% exposure) Try not to burn the grays too much hehe. Then run the 2nd set of the action, and it'll resize and make an adjustment layer that is way overleveled. You can use this layer to look for leftover dusts, remove it if there are none. Fill the bubbles with whites and do any redraws if any and your down. Any questions, fire. Hope it all works

Yeah you can't run the action without Topaz 2.2, because thats what the action does Razz.
Why can't you open the key? what does it say?
Otherwise we'll just leave the horrible quality pages. I'll probably give you a page from Railgun or something to see your burning skills and if the grays are finally okay and then we're pretty much done I guess.

Ew =/.
Well I'll just give you a mag page that can be cleaned without topaz or denoising software; It doesn't matter that much as we currently do not have a project with those kind of pages, and we do clean those kind sometimes but yeah not that often.
Okay, it'll be a railgun page.

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/8026/rg3821.jpg

Now for these, just rotate crop and level, however you have to be kinda carefull with the levels, because if you level it a little too dark, then the grays will suffer greatly. Do not level till all the blacks are black, just level till the blacks are decent, then use the burn tool to make them fully black afterwards. If you quickly overburn (going out the blacks an on the grays for example) then I'd suggest the following method: Take the magic wand tool, put the tolerance at 15 or something (toggle with it a bit) and click on a black. Then go to select -> modify -> contract and fill in 2 pixels. Now it'll be easier to burn, however some dark grays might still get selected and heavy dusts wont, so you'll still have to watch out a bit, ugh.

Ah and please, make a background copy for the leveling (so the original raw is on the background and the leveled on the copy) and optionally you can make another layer to do the burning and or redraws, but thats not necessary. When we will be qcing your work in the group we'd always want to have the raw as a reference right next to it you see.
