Winter 2011 Anime Thoughts

Post by ClaymoreSmiley on Sun Jan 16, 2011 2:18 am

I'm just gonna get this ball rolling. Here's my thoughts on the first ep of every new season this winter (not counting sequels)

The Good
Gosick - I liked the art, the music, the fact that it's a mystery series, the references to paranormal stuff, and the loli main girl. Even non-loli fans should check this out, it's based off a completed book series so the story should be very contained and not have one of those random endings they make up when they don't know how it's really supposed to end.

Wolverine - A million times better than the commercial, they fixed how Logan looks though he's still a little on the tall and skinny side for a Wolverine. However the fights were epic, especially the boken battle at the end of the first ep. And, hey, if there's good fights then I guess it's a good Wolverine show.

Level E - Heck yeah! Hunter x Hunter is one of my favorite series ever so I guess it's no surprise that I love this. It's about aliens... and that's all we know so far. The blonde-haired main guy is both hilarious and thought provoking, as is the entire series itself so far. I love the blend of comedy and depth.

Cardfight Vanguard - Card game anime created by the unholy pact of the Yu-gi-ou guys and Bushi Road, biggest card maker in Japan. Now I'm no Yu-gi-ou fan, but I do like Bushi Road because they make games like Weiss Schwarz that involve some of my favorite characters. Anyway Vanguard seems to be an interesting card game that I might pick up some day, and the monster design is cool which means that the anime, which is mostly just monsters fighting in the card game, is likewise fairly cool.

Fractale - Can't really say why I liked this one. The 'Fractale' is a computer network with nodes in the brain of every living human, the world is at peace and people tend to avoid each other and live alone. Then some random girl in distress shows up and is rescued by our main hero, starting a chain of events that will etc. etc. I've heard this one before. I dunno, I liked it despite it's slightly tired hook. Also it had a famous celtic tune as its ending theme which intrigued me.

Wandering Son - About cross-dressers in middle school. I liked the manga, and I like the anime.

The Weird
Magical Girl Madoka (or whatever it's called) - They got all artsy on this one, but I think they should have put more budget into the animation instead of the random backgrounds and stuff. The sloppy animation and character design clash so badly with the stylized settings that it's hard to watch. The plot had me semi-interested but none of the characters really hooked me in. I'll watch it if someone tells me that it turns out to be epic later on. What's it about? It's about magical girls, duh.

Dream Eater Meri - Hated the main girl's design, and I'm not that invested in whatever sob story she has that they un-subtly hint at. The dream sequences were interestingly off the wall, but unless they continue to be amazingly strange throughout the series I doubt I'll be interested in keeping up with it. Apparently it's about a girl and a guy who are somehow involved with the dream world, I didn't follow it very well.

Beelzebub - Other people may like it, I don't. Naked baby jokes don't do it for me. The only part I laughed at was the ruler of the underworld, and that's because he reminds me of me... too busy playing PSP to take over the world. Incidentally it's about a guy who accidentally picks up Satan Jr. the baby and has to take care of him.

Rio - This one is borderline between 'The Weird' and 'The Ugly'. It wasn't -bad-, per se, but it was a far cry from good. It's about a girl at a casino who makes those around her lucky... and beats up thugs... and has some kind of magical girl powers that connect her to gambling implements. It was all over the place. First she's doing this airheaded fanservice stuff, then she's whacking some thugs to protect a loli, and then she's playing some poker using her magical girl powers. Wouldn't the casino fire her if people start winning whenever she's around? Last I checked casinos do not enjoy lots of people winning money from them. And if they're gonna have the gambling in this, I wish they wouldn't have the 5 minute long magical girl crap. If you want impact then make your magical gambling stuff short and powerful, not this huge journey through the land of cards.

The Ugly
Freezing - A bunch of busty chicks splatter each other all over this arena and, sometimes, fight these giant monsters. I'm not into guro and big chests thank you very much, and I like how they stole the system from Mai-HiME for this... I mean stop me if you've heard this one before:
1. Find a guy
2. Forge bond with said guy
3. You can now MATERIALIZE EQUIPMENT (I wonder if it's Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment...)
Also the main character's weapon was the most retarded thing I've seen since FF8s gunblade. And there's a part where she like spins it around... sorry but with how the hand grips are set the only way to spin it like that would be to break your wrist in several places. Nothing about this show impressed me. Will not watch again.

I Don't Like My Big Brother at All - A girl is in love with her older brother (they're only a year apart, so unlike most little sister shows this one doesn't involve a loli... well I guess that depends on your definition of loli though) and tries to seduce him. The brother, for his part, is seduced but too (logically, rightfully) scared of the consequences of SLEEPING WITH HIS SISTER to do anything about it. The character design is horrible, the plot is horrible, the anime is HORRIBLE.

These are just my opinions, and are only based off the first ep of each season so I may be utterly wrong on various counts, but as it stands this is what I believe.

I mostly agree with you on everything; I have to disagree with the placement of wandering song though, I haven't read the whole manga, but the anime just seemed much less appealing to me.

I also liked Dream eater merry good enough to be put in the 'good' tier;- I thought her outfit was really original, and the animation style and backgrounds are pretty cool. The story doesn't seem like much yet, I'm still hoping it'll infold into decent / great. Haven't read the manga of this, so I don't know.

And I'd like to add Infinite Stratos to the list, on the Ugly tier. I'm not a big fan of Mecha anime to begin with, but I don't hate them. This anime doesn't even have much mecha, to my surprise. the story is one wich you can see in nearly every season. A huge combination of cliches in a slightly different genre then usual doesn't do it for me.

I have read the manga and to be honest I find it nothing special. The humor is really forced and further it's all very generic...
Haven't seen the anime though.

Now that we've moved out of the first few weeks my follow-up impressions are:

Fractale is getting better and better, as are Wolverine, Gosick, and Level E. Cardfight Vanguard's last ep seemed a little pointless and was an odd wrench in the pacing so early in the show, but it introduced a cute loli so who am I to complain.
